Gilbert was the Son of Jephthah and Caroline Anna Bateman, of 7, Campbell Street, Queensbury.  He served as a Private in the 1st Battalion. Norfolk Regiment and died of wounds on 27th August 1918.

On the 1901 census Gilbert aged 2 was living at 14 Albert Street, Queensbury.  The family cannot be found on the 1911 census.

No service records are available for Gilbert, so we do not know when he was wounded.  The Battalion war diary shows that they were in action on 21st August 1918 close to the village of Achiet Le Petit, which overlooked the Arras/Albert railway.  They withdrew from the front line on the 26th August.

Gilbert is buried at BAGNEUX BRITISH CEMETERY, GEZAINCOURT (V. B. 10).  Gezaincourt is a village is situated 2kms to the south-west of the town of Doullens and the area was used by casualty clearing stations.
