Reginald BENSON

Son of William A. and Emily Benson; husband of Irene Benson.  Reginald served in the Royal Artillery, 2/1 Maritime Regiment as Gunner.  He died on 7th February 1943, aged 26.

His inscription can be found on the PORTSMOUTH NAVAL MEMORIAL.

Reginald was serving on convoy rescue ship HMS Toward as part of convoy SC 118.  HMS Toward was torpedoed and sunk in the Atlantic Ocean south east of Cape Farewell by U-402 (Kriegsmarine) with the loss of 46 lives of the 74 crew aboard.

The 1939 register records Reginald and his wife, Irene as living at 9 Medway, his occupation at that time was a hosiery knitter.
