John BIRD

Born in Glasgow, John enlisted in Bradford. He was married to Lily and they had three children, Elizabeth born 1903, John Benjamin born 1907 and George Albert born 1911.

Pension index cards record Lily living at Marshfield Place, Bradford then 10 Glazier Row, Queensbury. There are various entries for the three children across pension records and it appears that they were split up and lived away from their mother. Pension payments for Elizabeth are shown as ‘transferred to Mr Gardener, Council Offices Queensbury. A guardian, Nellie Christine, is mentioned in relation to Elizabeth and John and the youngest child George can be found living in Ayr.

John served in the Duke of Wellington’s (West Riding Regiment) and was killed in action on 11th October 1918, he is buried at WELLINGTON CEMETERY, RIEUX-EN-CAMBRESIS (II. E. 1/10).
