Rowland Edwin Birdsall, shown as Roland on CWGC records, was aged 39 when he lost his life serving near to Arras with the 13th Battalion. Northumberland Fusiliers, his medal card states, ‘presumed dead’.

Born in Otley he is shown on the 1911 census living with his wife, Alice Ann and their three children at Haycliffe Hill, Horton district, Bradford and employed as a bricklayer.

The CWGC record, Husband of A. A. Birdsall, of 19, Highgate Rd., Clayton Heights. Rowland is commemorated on the Clayton Heights war memorial.

Having no known grave Rowland is commemorated on the ARRAS MEMORIAL (Bay 2 and 3).
