Joseph served in the 1st/4th Battalion. Duke of Wellington’s (West Riding Regiment) and was killed in action on 10th April 1918, he was aged 27.

Born in Southowram, Joseph had four brothers and two sisters, his parents were William and Ruth Ann and in 1911 they lived at 79a Gibbet Street, Halifax.  Joseph at that time was aged 20 and employed as a grocer’s assistant.  On 29th July 1914 Joseph married Harriet Whitaker at Queensbury Parish Church, Harriet lived at 14 Catherine Slack.  The CWGC show the following address for Harriet, 70 Holly Bank, Catherine Slack, Halifax.

The 1st/4th Battalion. Duke of Wellington’s were in action at Erquinghem Lys on 10 April, the war diary gives a detailed account of what was a heavy day of action for the battalion and saw them withdraw to Nieppe.  Joseph has no named grave and is commemorated on the TYNE COT MEMORIAL (Panel 82 to 85 and 162A).
