Born in 1894 Newman was the eldest son of John and Emma Cavill, he had one brother, John Stewart who was two years younger.

1901 saw the Cavill’s living on Alma Street and in 1911 they were living at 2 Peel Street. Newman, then aged 17, was employed as a woolsorter, his mother and brother were also mill workers.  Newman married Annie Woodford in late 1914 and they had one child together.

Newman who served in the 2nd/6th Battalion. West Yorkshire Regiment (Prince of Wales’s Own) died on 9th June 1917, at this time his regiment were in camp at Gomicourt undergoing specialist training and providing working parties, the Register of Soldiers Effects records that he died accidently.  Newman is buried at ACHIET-LE-GRAND COMMUNAL CEMETERY EXTENSION (I. J. 13).
