James Hextall DEVINE

Son of Michael and Sarah Ann Devine; husband of Stella Devine, of Shelf.  James served as a Private with the York and Lancaster Regiment, 2nd Battalion.  He died on 1st June 1944, aged 34.

He is buried at TAUKKYAN WAR CEMETERY, Myanmar (Burma).

Originally buried at Sahmaw war cemetery: TAUKKYAN WAR CEMETERY is the largest of the three war cemeteries in Burma (now Myanmar).  It was begun in 1951 for the reception of graves from four battlefield cemeteries at Akyab, Mandalay, Meiktila and Sahmaw which were difficult to access and could not be maintained. The last was an original ‘Chindit’ cemetery containing many of those who died in the battle for Myitkyina.  (Details from the CWGC)

James’s headstone reads:  “God grant you eternal rest”.

The Devine family were from Hartlepool and the 1911 census records that James was the youngest of seven children.  Michael and Sarah Ann were living at 12 Cardigan Street, Queensbury in 1939.

James and Stella married in 1939 and had a daughter.  Living in Shelf, James was employed as a carpet fitter, working for TF Firth and Company and Stella was a mill worker.  James is known to have played for Black Dyke Mills junior band.
