Son of Isaac and Edith Drake, of Horton Bank, Yorkshire; husband of Edna Drake, of Horton Bank.

Edgar served as a Private with the Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire Regiment, 2nd Battalion.  He died on 16th April 1944, aged 30.

He is buried at CASSINO WAR CEMETERY, Italy.

Although no direct link to Queensbury has been found it is to be presumed that this is the Edgar Drake named on the village memorial.

Probate records record that Edna, whom Edgar married in 1940, received his effects which were £559 3s 10d.  At the time of probate, August 1944, she was living at Carnaby Street, Horton Bank Top.

Killed during the battle of Monte Cassino, 17th January – 18th May 1944, Edgar was originally buried close to where he fell.  In June 1945 he was reburied at Cassino War Cemetery.

His headstone inscription reads:  “He shall grow not old as we who are left grow old. RIP”.
