James served in the Royal Engineers as a Sapper with 189 Transportation Company. He died on 29th July 1940, aged 34. James is buried at COLOMBO (KANATTE) GENERAL CEMETERY, Sri Lanka.
His death was due to malaria which he had contracted at sea, the CWGC site informs us that the Military Hospital at Colombo received cases of sickness from the troops on the land, or from passing transports. It is not clear if he died while at sea or in the military hospital.
James was a father of three, following his death the children were placed in an orphanage, two were later adopted.
James was identified through his family who still live in the village and we thank them for providing the above which allowed us to ensure that he is not forgotten.
