Thomas FLETCHER
Thomas Granville Fletcher attested on 9th December 1915 and was mobilized on 16th May 1916 joining the 29th Battalion. Northumberland Fusiliers. He was employed at that time as a machine moulder, aged 25 and married to Annie Blakely. Thomas and Annie had married in April 1915 and lived at 48 Ambler Thorn, Queensbury, they had no children. His parents were William and Emma who in 1911 lived at Catherine Slack, he was the middle born of three boys.
Following training Thomas was posted to the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force on 8th November 1916 and served in this theatre until February 1918 gaining promotion to Lance Corporal. He is shown as at depot on 6th February and was discharged on 19th March 1918 as ‘no longer physically fit for war service’.
Thomas died on 3rd July 1919 and was buried at AMBLER THORN UNITED METHODIST BURIAL GROUND. It is believed that his grave is now lost to housing.
Annie applied for a pension with the case opened on 22nd July and at first was successful. A later pension card dated 10th August 1920 records the loss of pension as ‘her late husband’s earnings prior to the war were insufficient to qualify her for a pension’.
