Ernest GLEDHILL

Son of Fred Cameron Gledhill and Mary Gledhill; husband of Grace Gledhill, of Shelf, Yorkshire. 

Ernest served in the Royal Artillery as a Gunner in 13 Anti-Tank Regiment.  He died on 14th December 1941, aged 22 and is buried at TAIPING WAR CEMETERY, Malaysia.

Ernest was born in 1919, his parents had married earlier that year. In 1939 his family lived at Burnley Hill Terrace, Shelf.In 1941 Ernest married Grace, nee Shepherd, they had one child, a son. Only a few weeks after his wedding, Ernest received a telegram calling him back to his unit who were about to sail overseas. Ernest died of wounds, having suffered a fractured skull and shrapnel wounds, it is thought that these were caused by a landmine.

The inscription on his headstone reads: “Always remembered”.
