HOGAN Philip

Philip HOGAN

Born in Hartlepool in 1901, Philip’s family came to Queensbury in 1928. By that time Philip had left the family home and is known to be living in the South of England. In Spring 1925 he had married Beryl Williams, with their marriage registered in Devonport.

Serving in the Merchant Navy, Philip was an Assistant Steward onboard MV Abosso which was a passenger ship, although as the passenger list shows most of the passengers were military personnel including a contingent of the Dutch Navy.

At 22.13hrs on 29th October 1942, U boat U-575 fired four torpedoes at the unescorted Abosso but only one of them hit. A coup de grace struck the ship at 22.28hrs which caused her to sink at 23.05hrs. The master, 150 crew members, 18 gunners and 193 passengers were lost. Twelve crew members, two gunners and 17 passengers were picked up on 2nd November by HMS Bideford.

Philip who was aged 40 is commemorated on the TOWER HILL MEMORIAL (Panel 2) and on the Newquay war memorial.
