Leonard Arthur Mahomet HUNTER

Son of Thomas W. and Pauline Hunter; husband of Margaret Hunter, of Queensbury.  Leonard served in the Royal Navy as an Able Seaman onboard HMS President III (SS Empire Oak). He died on 23rd August 1941, aged 25.  Leonard is listed on the PORTSMOUTH NAVAL MEMORIAL.

SS Empire Oak was a steam tug and was sailing in convoy OG-71 off the coast of Portugal when the convoy was attacked by U-boat, U-564.  Two ships were hit and sunk, Empire Oak and Clonlara.

Empire Oak had 37 men onboard when she was attacked, 17 of these men were survivors from an earlier attack on the convoy, nine of the rescued men along with 14 crew members of Empire Oak were lost. 

Between the 19th and 23rd convoy OG-71, made up of 22 ships, was attacked by enemy U-boats with the loss of 10 ships and over 400 lives.
