Edwin was from a family of eight children, seven boys, one girl.  His parents were Robert and Ann and in 1911 they lived at 35 Briggs Street, Queensbury, before that they had lived at Glazier Row.  The Queensbury Roll shows that they went on to live at 2 Jester Place and that five of the Knowles’s sons served during in the war.

The UK, Army Registers of Soldiers’ Effects show that Edwin was married to Lily, however details of the marriage have not been found.  Edwin’s medal card shows that he had landed in France on 9th September 1915 and served in the 12th/13th Battalion, Northumberland Fusiliers, he was killed in action on 18th April 1918.

Edwin has no known grave and is named on the TYNE COT MEMORIAL (Panel 19 to 23 and 162).
