Arthur L LAYCOCK
Son of Tom Lonsdale Laycock and Betty Laycock, of Ambler Thorn. Arthur served in the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve as a Sergeant (Air Gunner) with 1483 (Bombing) Gunnery Flight. Arthur died on 30th March 1943, aged 20.
He is buried at QUEENSBURY CEMETERY.
Arthur lost his life when his Wellington bomber (Z1747) suffered an unexpected structural failure (the main spar assembly failed outboard of the starboard engine) while on a cine camera exercise.
Flying from RAF Marham, Norfolk, the structural failure caused the starboard wing to break away. Z1747 crashed between Marham and Barton Bendish, with the loss of nine airmen.
His headstone inscription reads: “Remembrance, love’s last gift”.
