MACLAREN Ian A

Ian Archibald MACLAREN

Son of Lachlan and Jessie MacLaren; husband of Jennie MacLaren, of Queensbury.  Ian served in the 7th Battalion. Seaforth Highlanders with the rank of Corporal. He died on 3rd November 1944, aged 23.  Ian is buried at MIERLO WAR CEMETERY, Netherlands.

Ian was a gamekeeper from Moray, Scotland, he was one of five children. It is believed that Jennie’s maiden name was Sutcliffe and she can be found on the 1939 England and Wales Register living on Northern Street. Ian and Sarah married in January 1944 in Calderdale.

During the war the newly built school buildings and surrounding fields on Deanstones Lane were used as a military camp.  All though little is known of the camp, one of the Regiments who did spend time in the village were the Seaforth Highlanders.  Perhaps Ian was based here and married a local girl?

Headstone inscription:  “At the going down of the sun and in the morning, I will remember you”.
