William Arthur was the son of William and Margaret Robinson, of 10 South Bank, Queensbury, the CWGC also state that he was a native of Denholme. William had three older siblings, Sarah, Harrison and Maude. The 1901 census records the family as living on Station Road, Denholme and in 1911 they were living at Cliffe Terrace, Denholme. At the time of the 1911 census William was aged 20 and was employed as a bank clerk.
He enlisted at Keighley serving first with the Northumberland Fusiliers before transferring to the 2nd/4th Battalion. King’s Own Yorkshire Light Infantry. William, who was aged 27, died of wounds on 4th September 1918.
He is buried at MONT HUON MILITARY CEMETERY, LE TREPORT (VIII. F. 9B). His grave bears the inscription: “He laid his richest gift his life on the altar of sacrifice”.
