Husband of Joyce Sheavills, of Bradford. Ernest served in the Royal Air Force as a Sergeant (Air Gunner) with 115 Squadron. He died on 4th April 1945, aged 24. Ernest is buried at RHEINBERG WAR CEMETERY, Germany.
With no record for the spelling Sheavilles it is to be presumed that this is a mistake on the war memorial and the correct spelling is Sheavills.
Ernest was an air gunner for Lancaster bomber HX555. At 19:11hrs on 4th April they took off from Witchford to bomb the synthetic-oil plant at Leuna. On the outbound journey they collided with a 186 Squadron Lancaster, RA533. All eight of the crew of HX555 were killed, along with six from RA533.
His headstone inscription reads: “In loving memory of a dear husband. One of the best the world could find”.
The Sheavills were from Durham, Ernest’s parents were Thomas and Mary and he was the youngest of seven children (three boys, four girls) it appears that his mother may have died during or shortly after his birth.
Ernest and Joyce (nee Long) were married in Bradford in early 1945, it is unknown when he came to Bradford. His eldest brother John and wife Jane can be found on the 1938 electoral roll and the 1939 register living on Hazelhurst, Queensbury.
