Darwin was born in Queensbury in 1886 and was the youngest of Roilance (Roleance) and Sarah Anne’s eight children. On the census before his birth, 1881, his parents were living at Glazier Row, Mountain, no census return is available for 1891 however the 1901 return records Darwin then aged 15 living with his parents at Prospect Place, Shelf. He was employed in a worsted mill.
Darwin married in about 1908 his wife was Sarah and the 1911 census shows they had two children Alice and Mary, they were living in Heywood and he was employed as a carter (for a general carrier).
Serving in the 12th/13th Battalion. Northumberland Fusiliers, Darwin died (believed killed in action) on 4th October 1917 he was aged 31. Having no known grave, he is commemorated on the TYNE COT MEMORIAL (Panel 19 to 23 and 162).
Sarah returned to Yorkshire and is shown on CWGC records as living at 8, Holt’s Lane, Clayton.
