SYKES George

George SYKES

George was born in 1890 and was the only child of John Edward and Mary Jane Sykes who in 1911 were living at 36 Priestley Hill, Ambler Thorn.

The CWGC record that George was the husband of Ethel Sykes, of 36, Priestley Hill, Ambler Thorn and the register of soldiers’ effects indicate that they had a child.  It is believed that they married in 1911 and that Ethel’s maiden name was Taylor.

Serving in the B Company, 9th Battalion. Northumberland Fusiliers, George was a Lance Corporal (his rank is also given as Lance Sergeant).  He was wounded on 22nd June 1917, when in the trenches, the line was heavily shelled, the Battalion suffered three killed and sixteen wounded.
