Hugh’s parents were John and Grace who are shown on the CWGC records as living at West Field Terrace, West End, Queensbury.  The Halifax Courier show that they were residing at the School House Raggalds at the time of his death and it is this address that is shown on the 1911 census.

The Walker family were large and much travelled, having seven children, 4 boys 3 girls, the two eldest were born in Norfolk, with the rest of the children including Hugh, born in Cambridgeshire, the family were living there in 1901.  The census for 1911 show that all those of working age were employed in the mills

Hugh who originally served in the Yorkshire Regiment was serving with 1st Company of the Machine Gun Corps when he was killed in action aged 20, on 29th August 1916.  Having no known grave, he is commemorated on the THIEPVAL MEMORIAL (Pier and Face 5 C and 12 C.)

His older brother Fred was killed in action on 3rd July 1916, both men are named on their family grave in Queensbury cemetery.
