WILLIS Charles Edgar

Charles Edgar WILLIS

Son of William and Rebecca Willis; husband of Sarah Willis, of Queensbury.  Charles served in the Royal Navy as a Petty Officer Stoker onboard HMS Bishopgate.

He died on 16th February 1946, aged 54.  Charles is buried at DUNFERMLINE (DOUGLAS BANK) CEMETERY.

Charles is recorded on Naval documents as died, with no cause of death shown.  His grave, a private headstone, carries the inscription:  ‘In loving memory of my dear husband’.

Charles was born on 7th December 1891 in Bradford.  He married Sarah in 1917 and was employed as a papermaker before enlisting into the Royal Navy.

The Royal Navy Registers of Seamen’s Services, 1848-1939 have several listings for Charles with dates covered from 17th August 1910 until 5th January 1928.  Many of the names shown on his records are depots and depot ships and it is hard to make out his service, this includes throughout the First World War. Like all good sailors Charles had a tattoo, the name of his mother, Rebecca.

It is not known if Charles had continued to serve or re-enlisted into the Royal Navy for the Second World War.

Charles is not listed on the village war memorial.
