Herbert Milton WOOD



Herbert was born in Beggarington, Queensbury in 1894, his parents were Irvine and Annie who in 1891 lived at Pleasant Row.  In 1901 they lived in Shelf and the census shows that Herbert had an older brother Walter.  Walter died in 1910 at the age of 20.

The 1911 census shows Herbert and his parents living at 39 Carr Street, Bankfoot. Bradford.  It was from this address that Herbert enlisted on 17th November 1915, aged 22 and standing at 5’2 he was employed as a warehouseman.

Having joined the Duke of Wellington’s (West Riding) Regiment, Herbert disembarked in France on 18th May 1916, joining the 10th Battalion.  He was killed in action on 3rd October 1916.  Having no named grave, he is commemorated on the THIEPVAL MEMORIAL (Pier and Face 6 A and 6 B).
